BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity volleyball team played its second consecutive 3A school to open the Ruby Mountain League season.
The Lady Longhorns (0-2 Ruby Mountain, 12-12 overall) hosted Elko on Tuesday, Sept. 27, with the Indians winning 25-12, 25-17, 19-25 and 25-16.
"We are still facing the same old problem - lack of consistency with our passing which affects the rest of our game," said BMHS head coach Sondra Torgerson. "When we pass well, we are doing pretty good on our offense. I'm pleased that they were able to play well for one game and get a win. We played better than when we faced Elko earlier this season."
Amanda Wallock had two digs for Battle Mountain. Kalin Nelson added four digs, four kills and one ace, Gabby Cruz seven digs, four aces and one kill and Pooja Bhakta a team-high 19 assists to go with three digs, one block and one ace. Samantha Samuelson had 10 digs and three aces, Abbie Mikelson 14 kills (eight of them in the third game), six digs and two blocks, and Hannah Hale six kills, four blocks and one assist. Kelsey Kroll added five assists, one block and one dig.
"At times we show signs of being a tough team, but at other times we make a mistake and let it affect our next few plays," Torgerson said. "These are signs of our lack of experience at the varsity level. We have to shake off our mistake and focus positively on the next play."
Battle Mountain was scheduled to play at Elko on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. The Lady Longhorns return home Thursday to play Lowry at 5 p.m. and travel to Silver Stage Saturday for an 11 a.m. start.
