Battle Mountain knocks off Spring Creek for first league win Lady Longhorns to play four times in seven days

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity volleyball was victorious in its 2011 homecoming match with the 3A Spring Creek Spartans this past Saturday.

The Lady Longhorns were able to beat the Spartans in three games, 25-20, 25-18, and 25-17, which was the first victory in the Ruby Mountain League. Battle Mountain is no 1-4 in league play and 14-14 overall.

"Our kids are pretty busy during homecoming week so as a coach you never know which team is going to show up," said BMHS head coach Sondra Torgerson. "So it was nice to get this victory especially for the seniors and to also be able to give all the players a bit of playing time. It was also an important win because we need the victory point wise in our 2A league and most important, mentally."

Battle Mountain led 5-2 in the first set but Spring Creek's libero served five points in a row and Spring Creek's next server, added seven consecutive points and the Spartans led 16-8. The Lady Longhorns climbed back into the set, as Kelsey Kroll served four points to help close the gap to 18-14.

"After an intense time out we decided to play with some enthusiasm and Gabby Cruz was able to serve eight service points to put us in the lead at 23-19," Torgerson said. "The other two matches we were able to get off to a fairly early lead and hold on to it."

Abbie Mikelson had nine kills, five blocks, two digs and one ace, Kroll added four kills, two assists, one ace and one dig and Amanda Wallock two digs. Kalin Nelson posted two kills, two assists, four digs and one ace, Gabby Cruz three aces and three digs and Pooja Bhakta 12 assists, three aces and two digs. Samantha Samuelson had three digs and two aces, Hannah Hale had one block and one kill and Rebekah Russell one kill.

This week is extremely busy for the Lady Longhorns. Battle Mountain was scheduled to host Pershing County Tuesday and results were not available at press time. The Lady Longhorns travel to Spring Creek tonight to play the Spartans again at 6:30 p.m., and then on Friday they travel to West Wendover for a 6 p.m. (MST) match and will be playing at White Pine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
