BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity volleyball team opened its Ruby Mountain League season against two teams from the Northern 3A.
The Lady Longhorns traveled to Winnemucca on Friday, Sept. 23, to face Lowry and lost 27-25 and 25-15 to the Lady Bucks. Battle Mountain was back on its home floor on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and was defeated by Elko 25-5 and 25-18.
Against Lowry, Gabby Penola led the Lady Longhorns with two kills, while Caitlyn Warwood and Brooklyn Quintana each had four digs. Quintana added a team-high three assists and Amy Doornek finished with three aces.
Dallas Schroeder, Andresa Dinwiddie and Penola each had one kill, Torgerson three aces and one assist and Wayne Piramede two assists.
"We are actually competing against the bigger schools right now (except the first set against Elko)," said BMHS head coach Roger Wallock. "We need to eliminate our simple mistakes and become more aggressive serving and hitting the ball if we want to beat these schools."
Battle Mountain was scheduled to play at Elko on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. The Lady Longhorns host Lowry on Thursday at 4 p.m. and travel to Silver Stage on Saturday for a 10 a.m. match.
