LOVELOCK - The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity girls basketball team went on the road this past Thursday to Lovelock and was defeated 55-12 by Pershing County.
Following a basket by the Lady Longhorns' Gabby Penola to make the score 4-2, the Mustangs scored the next 24 points, including the final 16 of the opening period of play. Pershing County used a tough press defense to force a number of turnovers by Battle Mountain. Pershing County scored its final six points of the first quarter on layups off turnovers, which was triggered by the press.
The Mustangs grew their advantage to 28-2 midway through the second quarter, when Jade Harkness stopped the 22-0 run with a pair of free throws with 4:17 left in the first half. The Lady Longhorns picked up their first field goal of the second quarter 66 seconds later on a layup by Amanda Wallock. Pershing County went on to lead 33-6 at halftime.
The Mustangs began the second half with an 8-1 run to increase the lead to 41-7 and midway through the fourth quarter, the game was played with a running clock under the NIAA 40-point mercy rule.
Penola led Battle Mountain with five points; Wallock added four, Harkness two and McKenzie Huddleston one.
The Lady Longhorns play host to Yerington on Friday at 6 p.m., and host Pershing County on Friday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. Battle Mountain then closes out its crossover games on Saturday, Jan. 14, at Silver Stage at noon.
