BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity girls basketball team was defeated 48-5 by Pershing County on Friday in Battle Mountain, in one of the final tune-up games before the start of the conference season.

The Lady Longhorns picked up a free throw from Kendall Berumen with 3:31 left in the first quarter to cut the Mustang lead to 4-1, but Pershing County fired back with 10 consecutive points and held Battle Mountain without a field goal in the opening eight minutes of play to lead 12-1.

The Mustangs added the first eight points of the second period to grow the advantage to 20-1, before Gabby Penola made the Lady Longhorns' first field goal of the game with 5:41 left in the first half. That proved to be the only points for Battle Mountain in the second quarter, as Pershing County tallied the final 10 points to lead 30-3 at halftime.

The Mustangs held the Lady Longhorns scoreless in the third period and built a 46-3 advantage that saw the game played with a running clock for the final 10 minutes of the game.

Each team scored just two points in the fourth quarter, as Battle Mountain picked up a basket by Penola, who finished with four points. Berumen had the other point for the Lady Longhorns.

Battle Mountain was scheduled to play at Silver Stage on Saturday and at Elko on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time for either game.

The Lady Longhorns play host to Lowry on Friday and travel to Spring Creek next Tuesday for a pair of 3 p.m. games.
