Battle Mountain JV falls to Elko and Lowry, beats Silver Stage Longhorns to host Spring Creek Saturday

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School junior varsity volleyball team played some of its best volleyball of the year last week, but had just one win to show for the effort.

The Lady Longhorns traveled to Elko on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and gave the Indians a tough three-set challenge, with Elko holding on for a 26-24, 21-25 and 15-9 win. Two days later Battle Mountain was back home to host Lowry and was defeated 25-11 and 12. The Lady Longhorns closed out the busy week Saturday at Silver Stage and came away with a 25-21 and 25-16 win to improve to 10-9 on the season.

Caitlyn Warwood had five digs and four aces for Battle Mountain against Elko, while Brooklyn Quintana added five assists and Kaleah Torgerson four aces. Gabby Penola also had two kills.

"We really wanted to come out against Elko and prove we weren't as bad as we showed against them the first time," said BMHS head coach Roger Wallock. "We played very good volleyball and almost got the upset."

Battle Mountain ran into a defensively tough team in Lowry, who made very few mistakes on the night. Amy Doornek and Dallas Schroeder each had one kill, Torgerson two aces, Quintana four assists and Warwood two digs.

"The Lowry game scores are misleading," Wallock said. "We may have played our best volleyball of the year, but Lowry made very few mistakes and dug out our multiple hits. I have never been so pleased with a loss."

After playing the larger schools in its league for the past two weeks, Battle Mountain was in Silver Springs Saturday for a crossover match with Silver Stage of the Lahontan League.

Wallock said the team struggled but got the much-needed win.

Torgerson had five assists, three kills and three aces, Quintana five assists and Warwood two digs.

Battle Mountain hosts Spring Creek on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Pershing County on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
