BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School girls golf team finished second at the Division III West Regional Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 8, in Carson City and qualified for the state tournament that begins Thursday.
Incline ran away with the team title, shooting a 430, while Battle Mountain was second with a 507. Yerington was third at 605 and North Tahoe did not record a team score.
Incline freshman Christine Schwartz edged out junior teammate Lauren Kelly by one stroke to capture the low medalist honors. Schwartz shot a 100 and Keller finished at 101.
Jessica Jones shot a 103 to finish third overall and was the top Battle Mountain golfer on the day. Sam Carson, Kennedie Davis and Kylee Squires will also participate for the Lady Longhorns.
"Incline is the team to beat," said BMHS head coach Paul Tremayne. "Realistically, if we play well we could finish second at state. We need to play way better than we did yesterday. We are happy that we qualified."
While Incline and Battle Mountain advanced to state as a team, the top five individuals from non-qualifying teams also earned state berths. They included North Tahoe's Abbi Johnson and Yerington's Lillian Klain, Shelby Hawkins, Blanca Guzman and Areli Sanchez.
Wells and Round Mountain earned the two spots from the Division III East Championships on Wednesday, Oct. 9, in Ely.
White Pine Bobcats Taylor Kane, Teana Marshal, Makayla Dolezal and Amber Finch qualified as individuals as did West Wendover's Xena Mayle.
The two-day NIAA State Girls Golf Championships will be contested at West Wendover's Toana Vista Golf Course on Thursday and Friday.
