BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School girls golf team finished up its season with a second-place finish at the NIAA 2A Nevada State High School Girls Golf Championship presented by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Farmers Insurance. The tournament was held Monday, Oct. 10, and Tuesday, Oct. 11, in Elko at the Ruby View Golf Course.
Round Mountain won the championship with a two-day total of 955, to claim its first-ever state title in the sport. Battle Mountain was second at 1,014 and Wells third with a 1,029, followed by Yerington (1,100), North Tahoe (1,127), North Tahoe (1,138) and West Wendover (1,264). Incline and Mountain View did not record team scores.
The first day of the tournament was played in cold and rainy conditions, while the weather improved for the golfers on the second day.
Incline's Grace Dolan was the individual champion with a 193, including rounds of 94 and 99. She finished second lat year.
Bria Jones led the Lady Longhorns with a two-day total of 100-96-196 to finish second overall. Ali Whitehead shot a 137-135-272, Jessica Jones carded a 143-134-277 and Cassidy Torrence had a 147-133-280. Sam Carson at 136-159-295 and Jordan Hammill 169-162-331 rounded out the scores for Battle Mountain.
"I was pleased with Bria and she had a chance to win the state championship," said BMHS head coach Paul Tremayne. "We did not have a great score but our other girls dropped their scores just enough to edge Wells for second. Overall it was good year the girls continued to improve. We are pretty young with two seniors no juniors two sophomores and two freshmen."
