BATTLE MOUNTAIN - It may be the end of September but the 1A/2A golf season is quickly coming to a close, with just two regular-season tournaments remaining on the schedule.
Battle Mountain High School made the trip to Ely last Thursday for the White Pine Invitational, where it finished third with a score of 486. Wells won the tournament with a team total of 418 and Round Mountain was second at 456. West Wendover (552) and White Pine (617) rounded out the scoring, while the Elko JV brought just three golfers and did not record a team score.
Wells had the top two individual finishers, with Margaret Wright earning medalist honors with a 94. Her teammate, Kelsey Franco, was one shot behind in second with a 95.
Battle Mountain's Bria Jones was third overall with a round of 97. Cassidy Torrence carded a 128 for the Lady Longhorns, Ali Whitehead shot 130 and Sam Carson and Jessica Jones each shot 131. Mikah DeAndreis completed the scoring for Battle Mountain with a 137.
"We are hitting the ball better but need to work on some course management issues," said BMHS head coach Paul Tremayne. "I am happy with our progress. We are playing with only two girls that had ever golfed prior to this year."
Battle Mountain travels to Wells on Thursday for a 10 a.m. tee time. The Longhorns are also hosting the 1A/2A state championships on Monday, Oct. 10, and Tuesday, Oct. 11, at Ruby View Golf Course in Elko. If anyone is interested in helping be a monitor during the championships, please contact Tremayne at 635-5436.
