BATTLE MOUNTAIN - As the regular season for the fall sports teams came to an end last weekend, two Battle Mountain High School squads are preparing for the playoffs.
The Longhorn football team, who finished third in the Division III North at 5-2, will travel to Yerington on Friday at 5 p.m. to play in the first round of the Division III state playoffs. The Lions defeated the Longhorns 41-6 earlier in the season.
Pershing County hosts Incline on Friday at 6 p.m. in the other Division III North matchup.
Mountain View plays Needles, Calif., and Lincoln County and Laughlin meet in the two Division III South games also this weekend.
If the Longhorns win, they will likely play at Mountain View on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 1 p.m.
The Battle Mountain volleyball team travels to Zephyr Cove and Whittell High School this Friday and Saturday for the Division III Regional Championships.
The Lady Longhorns earned the No. 4 seed and will face Whittell at 3 p.m. on Friday. In other matchups on Friday, Incline and White Pine play at 4:30 p.m., West Wendover and Yerington meet at 6 p.m., and Pershing County and Silver Stage match up at 7:30 p.m.
The semifinals are at 10 a.m. and 11:40 a.m., respectively, on Saturday, with the championship set for 2 p.m. If the Lady Longhorns win, they play the winner of Pershing County/Silver Stage at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday.
The top two volleyball teams advance to the NIAA Division III State Championships presented by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Farmers Insurance at Damonte Ranch and Galena high schools in Reno on Friday, Nov. 9, and Saturday, Nov. 10.
