Battle Mountain Elementary Schools kick off Reading Week Event held in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - On March 1, Battle Mountain Elementary Schools kicked off its Reading Week celebrations. The school does a full month of reading activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday each March.

March 1 was "wear shirts with words on them" and Doug Longchamps, aka "Doug E. Fresh," read a Reading Oath to the kids. All of the kids promised to read wherever they are because reading feeds your brain.

The schools celebrate on Thursdays in March, so March 8 will be "Make a Date with RIF (Reading is Fundamental) and Crazy Sock Day." This is a PTA-sponsored activity that gives away free books to all the kids in elementary schools.

On March 15, it's "Make a Date with Nonfiction," where students can dress up as a historical character or someone they admire. On March 22, it's "Speed Date a Book." Teachers will be playing a game much like musical chairs only with books on the chairs for students to do a quick read. No eliminations are necessary.

On March 29, it's "Make a Date with the Book Fair." The Mary S. Black library will have exciting new books for sale along with posters, pencils and other reading-related items.
