BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity boys basketball team lost for the first time this season but still won three of four games at the Comstock Classic in Virginia City last weekend.
The Longhorns (7-1) knocked off Eureka 58-38 on Thursday and split a pair of games on Friday, beating Wells 75-52, while losing 51-42 to host Virginia City. Battle Mountain bounced back on Saturday to beat Coleville (Calif.) 65-43.
"Overall, we played much better this weekend than we did last week," said BMHS head coach Roger Wallock. "Virginia City is a very big, physical team but until the last two minutes we still had a good chance to win."
Battle Mountain used 17 points from Kyle Bryant and 10 more from Marco Rangel to beat Eureka for the second time in two weeks. Bryant added five steals and four assists, while Rangel had a team-high six steals. Ryan Salazar had nine rebounds and four assists, James Willingham 10 rebounds and Jeremy Price six assists.
Battle Mountain outscored Wells 22-4 in the first quarter and led by 32 points at the start of the fourth period, when the Leopards rallied with 27 points to cut the final deficit to 23 points.
The Longhorns had three players in double figures. Bryant led the way with 18 points, with Dwight Douglas and Rangel adding 13 and 10, respectively. Willingham and Rangel each grabbed eight rebounds, and Rangel also had three steals. Price ended the game with six assists, and Daniel Itza and Bryant each had four assists.
In the loss to Virginia City, Price found his shooting stroke from long distance, hitting three 3-point shots to lead the team with 15 points. Willingham picked up 10 points and Rangel had 11 rebounds. Price had four assists and Jordan Warwood and Salazar each had one rebound.
Battle Mountain bounced back from its loss to Virginia City with an easy win over Coleville. The Longhorns had four players in double figures led by Bryant with 14 points. Price had 13 points, including three 3-point field goals, and Rangel and Salazar each had 11.
Willingham picked up five rebounds, Itza five assists and four steals and Salazar and Bryant six and five assists, respectively.
Battle Mountain plays its first home games of the season this weekend, hosting the Longhorn Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
"I was pretty pleased with our improved rebounding and our shooters finally are hitting some shots," Wallock said. "We are very excited to host our tournament this week."
