Battle Mountain boys start new season with four wins in Wells Longhorns travel to Virginia City this weekend

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School varsity boys basketball team opened its season with four wins in four games last weekend in Wells at the WREC Classic.

The Longhorns (4-0) began the year with a 36-31 victory over Jackpot on Thursday. They followed that up with two wins on Friday, beating Carlin 61-26 and Wells 54-47. Battle Mountain closed out the three-day tournament with a 51-27 win over Eureka.

"A good weekend to figure out where we are as a team," said BMHS head coach Roger Wallock. "We could not seem to play a good first half in any of the games but picked it up in the second half and pulled out a couple of close ones against very aggressive Jackpot and Wells' teams. Overall, we didn't turn the ball over too much but we couldn't seem to make our open shots."

In the win over Jackpot, Marco Rangel posted a double-double for Battle Mountain with 10 points and 17 rebounds. He also finished with nine blocks. Kyle Bryant led the Longhorns with 14 points, Ryan Salazar grabbed nine rebounds to go with two assists and Jordan Warwood had three steals and two assists. In addition, Jeremy Price finished with two assists.

Rangel had another strong game in the blowout win over Carlin with 16 points, 10 rebounds, six blocks and five steals. Price added 10 points and five assists and Bryant five assists.

Daniel Itza and Warwood each scored 12 points in the seven-point win over Wells, while Rangel had his third straight game of double figures in rebounds with 10. Price ended with five assists and three steals, and Salazar and Rangel had four assists and three blocks, respectively.

In the tournament finale for the Longhorns, Rangel scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had three blocks. James Willingham added five rebounds, Bryant six assists and two steals and Salazar two steals.

Battle Mountain is back on the road this weekend, beginning Thursday in Virginia City for the Comstock Classic.
