BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team completed a three-match road trip with two wins, even though they were playing shorthanded.
The Longhorns (2-3 Humboldt League, 3-6 overall) made the trip to Ely on Sept. 16 to face White Pine and won 3-2, despite the match being shortened to one half after a thunderstorm brought a halt to the match and forced the cancellation of the girls match. Marco Rangel scored twice for the Longhorns and Sandeep Singh added the other goal. Oscar Aragonez had an assist.
This past weekend, Battle Mountain traveled to Lyon County to play Fernley on Friday and Yerington on Saturday. The Longhorns played with just nine players over the two days, losing 8-3 to the Vaqueros, while beating the Lions 5-1.
Fernley led 6-1 after the first 40 minutes of play, but Battle Mountain kept the deficit at five goals while playing the Vaqueros even in the second half. BMHS head coach Mark Lake said that Battle Mountain did an outstanding job against Fernley's 11 men, especially in the second half.
Humberto Rios, Rangel and Aragonez each scored goals for the Longhorns, with each player adding one assist apiece.
Rangel earned his second hat trick of the season on Saturday against Yerington. Battle Mountain led 2-1 at halftime and then used a 3-0 spurt in the final 40 minutes to secure the win. Rios and Aragonez each scored and had an assist in the victory.
Lake noted that the players did an amazing job with just nine players and that Ivan Rios, Rios and Aragonez worked the midfield well with 33 steals.
Battle Mountain hosted Spring Creek Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time. The Longhorns host Rite of Passage Friday at 3 p.m. and Churchill County Saturday at 11 a.m. The busy schedule continues Tuesday, when the Longhorns travel to Spring Creek for a 2 p.m. start.
