Battle Mountain boys soccer team runs win streak to three games Longhorns close out season this week

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team continues to play some of its best ball of the season, as it ran its winning streak to three games with two homes wins this past weekend.

The Longhorns (5-8 Humboldt League, 6-11 overall) defeated Yerington 9-1 on Friday and Fernley 4-0 on Saturday.

The Longhorns held a 4-1 advantage at halftime over the Lions on Friday and then broke the game open with five more goals in the final 40 minutes.

Oscar Aragonez and Marco Rangel each had a hat trick with three goals apiece. Humberto Rios added two goals and Tyler Sparks one. Rangel also had two assists, as Battle Mountain got off 20 shots. Juan Lomeli had six saves on the day, allowing just the one first-half goal.

"Our play continues to improve with each game," said BMHS head coach Mark Lake. "This weekend showed how far we have come this year. Our team functioned as a complete unit as we could transition from defense to offense through the mid field quite well."

Battle Mountain avenged an earlier loss to Fernley, scoring three goals against the Vaqueros in the first half and never looking back. Aragonez picked up half of the four goals, with Rangel and David Castellon-Escobedo scoring the other two goals. Sparks also had an assist and Lomeli completed the shutout with seven saves.

Battle Mountain plays host to league-leading Elko today at 2 p.m. in its final home game of the season. The Longhorns then travel to Rite of Passage Friday at 4 p.m. and Fallon Saturday to play Churchill County at 11 a.m.

"I am looking forward to the final week of the regular season as we take on No. 1 Elko in our last home game and then we are on the road for a pair of matches next Friday and Saturday at ROP and Fallon," Lake said.
