BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team picked up one win in three matches last week to close out its fall season.
The Longhorns (6-10 Humboldt League, 7-13 overall) hosted Elko on Wednesday, Oct. 26, in their final home game of the season and were defeated 6-0. The Indians scored three times in both halves, as Battle Mountain goalie Juan Lomeli made 14 saves in the contest. The Longhorns had nine shots on the day, with Oscar Aragonez and Marco Rangel both with four. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for Battle Mountain.
"Despite the disappointment of the loss I feel we have turned the corner this year," said BMHS head coach Mark Lake. "The confidence is there and the technical and tactical part of the game is getting better. I expect great things from this team now and in the future."
Battle Mountain bounced back with a 5-3 win over Rite of Passage, avenging an earlier loss to the Rams this season. The Longhorns used two second-half goals to break free of the Rams, after going into halftime tied 3-3.
Rangel picked up a hat trick for Battle Mountain with three goals, with Jonathan Figeroa and Aragonez adding one goal apiece. Tyler Sparks and Aragonez each had an assist and Lomeli made five saves.
"We played hard in this game and came away with a convincing win," Lake said. "We are passing well and maintaining possession. The guys have come a long way this year."
Battle Mountain concluded its season Saturday at Fallon with a 4-2 loss to Churchill County. Rangel had both goals for the Longhorns, both of them unassisted. Lomeli had 10 saves on the day.
"We played extremely well and gave Fallon all they could handle," added the coach. "This was Fallon's 14 consecutive win with seven of those being shutouts. Until today no other team had managed to score more than one goal against them in the past 13 games. We have found our confidence and I am looking forward to working with this group next season."
