Battle Mountain boys soccer team drops three league games Longhorns travel to Lowry Saturday

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team suffered three league losses last week, including two of them by one goal.

The Longhorns (2-6 Humboldt League, 3-9 overall) hosted Spring Creek on Tuesday, Sept. 27, and lost 1-0 to the Spartans. On Friday, Rite of Passage visited and defeated Battle Mountain 2-1 with a goal in the final minute. Churchill County beat the Longhorns 4-0 on Saturday.

The match with Spring Creek was scoreless at halftime and continued for much of the second 40 minutes, when Spring Creek scored the only goal of the game in the 65th minute. The Spartans scored the goal as the ball got away from the goalie's hands and Spring Creek capitalized on the miscue.

"We played a good game and unfortunately Spring Creek got one on a bobbled ball that fell out of our keeper's hands," said BMHS head coach Mark Lake. "Oscar (Aragonez) was sent off the field after a yellow card, then got another for entering the field without the referee's permission. That was a game-changing event."

Marco Rangel and Humberto Rios had five and three shots, respectively, and Juan Lomeli made 12 saves.

Rite of Passage scored a first-half goal and maintained that advantage until the second half, when Rios scored the equalizing goal. It appeared the game would end in a 1-1 tie, but the Longhorns were called for a foul in the 80th minute. The Rams were able to get the winning goal on a penalty kick at the end of the match.

"To lose a game on a penalty kick in the 80th minute is difficult," Lake said. "We played hard and had plenty of chances but just could not finish today."

Battle Mountain took 26 shots in the game, including 10 from David Castellon-Escobedo. Rangel also had nine shots and Aragonez four, but the Longhorns could not find the back of the net. Lomeli had 10 saves in net.

Battle Mountain closed out the busy week on Saturday against Churchill County. The Greenwave scored three first-half goals and made the advantage hold for the final 40 minutes.

Devin Bartton, Aragonez and Rios each had two shots, and Lomeli made 13 saves.

Battle Mountain was scheduled to play at Spring Creek on Tuesday. Results were not available at press time. The Longhorns travel to Winnemucca Saturday to play Lowry at 11 a.m.
