Battle Mountain boys soccer team competes in Fallon crossover Longhorns go 1-3 over two days

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team opened its season this past weekend in Fallon for the Fallon Crossover Tournament.

The Longhorns went 1-3 over the two days, losing to North Tahoe 2-1 and Incline 5-3 on Friday. Battle Mountain lost 4-1 to Dayton in its first Saturday match, then came back to finish the tournament with a 2-1 win over Rite of Passage.

"The Longhorns played hard this weekend competing in the Fallon Crossover Tournament," said BMHS head coach Mark Lake. "We played four games over the course of the two-day event where temperatures exceeded 95 degrees and all of this with a roster of only 12 players."

Against North Tahoe, Marco Rangel scored both goals for the Longhorns and Juan Lomeli had nine saves. Rangel recorded all three goals in the loss to Incline as well. Humberto Rios picked up two assists against Incline and Lomeli had seven saves.

David Castellon-Escobedo had the goal against Dayton, with Garret Snellings assisting on the score and Lomeli collecting three saves. In the win over Rite of Passage, Oscar Arrognes and Rangel each scored a goal and Lomeli stopped seven shots in helping Battle Mountain to the win.

"I am very happy with what I saw this weekend," Lake said. "The team is moving the ball well and we are getting a lot of good opportunities to shoot on goal. We narrowly missed at least seven additional goals over the weekend. The entire team deserves recognition for the efforts they made in this weekend. Special recognition to Marco, Humberto, Ivan (Rios), Tyler (Sparks), Juan, Garrett, Jonathan (Figureoa) and David Castellon-Escobedo."

Battle Mountain was scheduled to play at Elko Tuesday night. Results were not available at press time. The Longhorns host Lowry Saturday at 11 a.m.
