BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School boys soccer team was on the road for two Ruby Mountain League matches this past week in Spring Creek and Winnemucca, losing both.
The Longhorns (2-8 Ruby Mountain League, 3-11 overall) were in Spring Creek on Tuesday, Oct. 4, and lost 8-0 to the Spartans. Just a week earlier, Battle Mountain played Spring Creek to a 1-0 score.
BMHS head coach Mark Lake said it was the worst game of the season for Battle Mountain, with bad weather, which included rain, and playing on a small field.
"We are capable of playing so much better than we did in this game," added the coach.
Humberto Rios had four shots for Battle Mountain, with Oscar Aragonez and David Castellon-Escobedo each getting three shots off. Longhorn goalie Juan Lomeli had four saves.
Battle Mountain played much better as it made the trip to Winnemucca on Saturday. The Buckaroos broke on the scoreboard in the 28th minute on a shot by Kevin Blanco, and Carlos Aguilar added a second goal in the 66th minute for all the scoring.
"We played well today," said Lake. "We had 16 shots on goal but we couldn't find the back of the net."
Marco Rangel and Aragonez combined for 12 of the 17 shots, while Lomeli made seven saves.
Battle Mountain has just one match this week, Friday at 2 p.m. against White Pine, as it celebrates Homecoming week.
