Barrick Mining awards funding to Lowry High School welding program

WINNEMUCCA - Barrick Gold Corporation's Turquoise Ridge Mine has made a significant donation to Lowry High School's welding and agricultural mechanics programs.

The mine, located about 43 miles northeast of Winnemucca on the eastern flank of the Osgood Mountains, donated $2,500 to the school following a request by Lowry High School teacher Andrew Meyers.

Meyers said the money will be put to good use in the school's Welding Technology and Agricultural Mechanics programs.

"We will update and improve some of the tools and equipment that the students use on a daily basis," said Meyers, "such as angle grinders, bench grinders and hand tools needed in a secondary welding program."

This is Meyers' first year teaching at Lowry. He said he was impressed by the gold giant's desire to aid his students' progress. "This is going to give our programs a big boost," he said.

Officials from Barrick Gold Corporation, including Rory Upshaw, Mitch Fifield and William Wilt, were on hand to present the check to the school earlier this spring.

Lowry Principal Debbie Watts said she continues to be impressed with Barrick's willingness to partner with her school. "We have been extremely blessed through their generosity," she said. "Their donations have made and will continue to make a huge difference for Lowry High School and its students."
