Barrick donation provides Humboldt Hospice with a storage solution

A generous donation by the Barrick Turquoise Ridge Mine has solved a big problem for the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice.

"We didn't have any place to store equipment for our patients," said HVH Executive Director Sherry Smith.

"We didn't have room in any of our existing storage and the office was not an option, so all this wonderful equipment that needs to go to our patients was outside, in the dust and the wind and the rain."

That all changed when the nonprofit organization petitioned Barrick's Community Relations Committee for money to build an outdoor shed.

With $1,225 in hand, hospice was able to purchase an outside storage shed and petition two volunteers - Norm Cartier and Ron Hallam - to put it together.

Not only does the new structure fully accommodate the nonprofit's wheelchairs, walkers, shower equipment and more, but volunteers can even walk in and out of the shed.

"It definitely more than meets our needs," said Smith. "We are very grateful to Barrick for this wonderful donation."

The mission of the Humboldt Volunteer Hospice is to honor and support individuals in the Humboldt County community who suffer from a chronic, debilitating or terminal illness.

All hospice care is provided at no cost to patients. Families do not need a doctor's referral in order to access hospice services.

Hospice also operates the Frugal Flamingo Thrift Store, located at 720 E. Fourth Street. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Donations are gladly accepted during the store's hours of operation.
