Banquet honors law enforcement for 43rd year

The annual Peace Officers Banquet is scheduled for April 24 to honor and recognize the law enforcement officers who keep the community safe.

The event is organized by the Winnemucca United Methodist Men, including member Todd Lewis.

Lewis said the event used to be strictly for police officers but it has been expanded in recent years. The banquet now honors agencies including (but not limited to) the Humboldt County Sheriff's Office, Winnemucca Rural Fire, Winnemucca City Fire, Humboldt General Hospital EMTs, Bureau of Land Management Fire and other.

The event is complimentary by invite only due to space restraints, Lewis said.

The banquet consists of a dinner which is donated by local merchants and a speech by Capt. Thomas Merschel with Nevada Highway Patrol. Lewis said Merschel is a former Winnemucca NHP employee but transferred to Elko. He is also a former member of Winnemucca United Methodist Church.

There will also be entertainment by the Swinging Seniors and the Winnemucca Brass Group.

The event begins at 6 p.m. on April 24.
