WINNEMUCCA - The Lowry High School varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders returned from their four-day camp at Boise State, with numerous awards and one All-American.

The varsity cheerleaders won a handful of first-place awards at the camp, which was held from July 17 - 20. The Buckaroos won the Spirit and Leadership awards as part of their stay at the camp.

Lowry also won awards for advanced dancing, spotting and chanting.

Chelsea Baker was named an All-American, which proved tougher to accomplish this year because only three were given at the camp out of 70 cheerleaders.

"That is a pretty big accomplishment," said LHS cheer coach Diane Rice. "They cut the number of All-Americans down quite a bit from the past. Chelsea worked hard to get that honor."

The All-American honor is the most prestigious award in cheerleading. The cheerleaders were judged on motion technique, jumps, tumbling, spirit and enthusiasm, voice projection and overall crowd appeal.

In addition, Chloe Yates was named the best captain at the camp. Both Baker and Yates have been mainstays on the cheerleading team in the past few years.

"That is one of the biggest awards you can win," Rice said. "It's just not for your team, but for the entire camp."

Also during the camp, the Lady Bucks Taylor LaTray and Yesenia Herrera garnered Pin it Forward awards,

Before camp starts, each instructor is given two pins. On the first two days of camp, it's the instructor's job to seek out the cheerleaders who demonstrate one or more of the reasons why American Needs Cheerleaders, including, but not limited to leadership, spirit, commitment to excellence, kindness and motivation.

At the end of the second day, during spirit sticks/awards, each instructor will give their two pins to the participants who meet these criteria.

At the end of the third day, the 'pinned' cheerleaders will give their extra pin to a cheerleader on a different team who also exemplified those values. An example of this could be a squad staying late to help pick up, giving good criticism to another squad or team member, or cheering on another team.

You can catch the Lowry cheerleaders in action throughout the school year, beginning on Thursday, Aug. 29, as the Buckaroos take on Battle Mountain in the opening football game of the season.
