Austin's Young qualifies for state championships in high jump

BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Austin High School's Emily Young qualified for the NIAA State Track and Field Championships this weekend at Silverado High School in Las Vegas.

The freshman earned the trip to southern Nevada with her second-place finish in the high jump at this past weekend's Division IV Regional Championships in Yerington. She cleared 5 feet to finish second. Young tied with McDermitt's Va Draunidalo but placed in the runner-up spot by missing fewer jumps.

Young placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 12-10.50, placing her one spot out of the transfer spot to state. She also finished 14th in the 800 meters with a time of 3 minutes, 1.08 seconds.

Teammate Kiara Gordon placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 27-0.75 and was eighth in the discus at 65-9.

As a team, Austin tied for ninth with Mineral County with 15 points apiece. Wells won the team title with 177 points and Sierra Lutheran was second with 148 points.

Jordan Burns was the only male competitor for Austin. He finished 13th in the shot put with a toss of 34-8 and the sophomore was 19th in the discus at 71-7.
