AUSTIN - Tyler Young from Boys Scouts of America troop # 210 accomplished his Eagle Scout project this summer. Young worked alongside 29 other volunteers, including cooks, wood cutters and wood splitters. The project entailed collecting, cutting and hauling 12 cords of wood from private property at Smith Creek Ranch in Reese River Valley to be donated to families in need.
The volunteers donated 234 hours, and the cut and stacked wood was valued at $4,000. Some families have already received donations, and the remaining wood will be donated throughout the winter.
The Eagle project is the highest advancement rank in Scouting, and it fulfills requirements in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills. In order to earn the merit, Young has to perform specific tasks organized by requirements and merit badges. Young consults with local Scouting leadership, chooses a project in which he takes pride and provides documentation of the accomplished work.
Young's project fulfills the Eagle Scout aspect of service to the community and demonstrates a Scout's community dedication by helping a non-profit organization.
