BATTLE MOUNTAIN - North and south county residents will be able to enjoy some holiday fun on Nov. 23 with two events featuring crafts, food and fun.
The Austin sorority, Beta Sigma Phi, will be holding a bazaar from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Toiyabe Café, an event that has been going on annually for around 20 years, said Sharon Tremayne, the sorority president, who is organizing the event along with the help of other sorority members.
"We've always had a great turnout, even with bad weather," she said. "Come on out. It will be a great time as always. There will be drinks and homemade goods. After you shop, you can have lunch at the café."
The funds raised from the event will go toward helping out local organizations as well as the Cecil Rose Scholarship which is given out annually to a graduating senior. Past bazaars have raised between $300 and $400.
There is unlimited booth space available and Tremayne said she is hoping to see around 15 vendors. In the past, vendors have sold baked goods, Scentsy Candles, crafts and pottery. Hot drinks will be available. The sorority will be selling drinks and baked goods.
The vendors will be donating door prizes. People will be able to get tickets for the prizes by purchasing items from vendors, Tremayne said.
Tables are $10 each and can be purchased up until right before the event by calling Debbie Bispo at (775) 964-2593 or Gail Utter at (775) 964-2304.
Last year saw around 10 booths and around 75 attendees, Tremayne said.
While Tremayne is gearing up for the bazaar in Austin, Battle Mountain senior Helen Thompson is getting ready for the annual Senior Center Bake Sale and Craft Fair, an event being held to raise money to help out seniors around Christmas and to possibly go toward a senior trip.
The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Senior Center and is not just for crafters. All vendors are welcome. So far, the event will feature gift baskets, Lander County Hospice, novelty items, crafts, handmade pillow cases, decorations and hometown hand-crafted gourds.
The seniors will be baking up a storm with a table full of goodies consisting of all types of breads, candies, pies, cakes, brownies and muffins, Thompson said.
"They are the best bakers in town," she added. "Come and try some."
In addition to the baked items, the seniors will be cooking up and serving homemade chili and cornbread for $3.50 a plate.
People can also snatch up some raffle tickets for a handmade jelly roll quilt for $1 each or six for $5. Tickets are on sale now at the Senior Center or during the craft fair. The drawing will be held in the middle of December at the senior dinner.
Thompson is still looking for vendors. The latest to sign up is Nov. 20. Booths are $10 each for non-seniors and free for seniors age 62 and up. They come with a table and chairs. Those who would like to sign up can call Sandi Smith at (775) 635-5311.[[In-content Ad]]
