WINNEMUCCA - The fifth Austin Fly-In will be held Aug 25 from around 9 a.m. until dusk at the Austin Airport and is being hosted by the Austin Airport Advisory Board and the Austin Lions Club.
The airport board is organizing the fly-in while the Lions Club will be hosting a huge noon barbecue, said Joe Dory, who is a member of both organizations. The local sorority will have breakfast items for sale in the morning.
Dory and Ray Williams, a member of the airport board, are the main fly-in organizers and Austin Lions Club President Virginia Austin is the main barbecue organizer, said Dory.
"It's just a good time, a good community family event," said Dory.
Dory said airplanes are expected to come and go all day. The event was not held last year but the two years before that saw 50 planes at each event and around 225 spectators. Dory said he expecting around 50 planes this year of all types, mostly single engines. A Lear jet out of California arrived at the last two fly-ins and may be coming this year, he said.
Dory said the event has seen pilots from Utah, Reno, Winnemucca, Boulder City, Idaho, Battle Mountain and Arizona. The spectators usually come from Austin, Kingston and Round Mountain.
The Lions Club barbecue will be $10 a plate and will include pit roasted beef, garlic bread, beans, potato salad and corn.
"It's a great feed," said Dory. "The underground pit barbecue is absolutely delicious. It's a tradition that was started by Austin Lions Club member Jerry Utter. He is deceased now but we are carrying on his tradition."
The airport board will possibly hold pilot games in the afternoon depending on the interest and the weather.
Airplane rides may be offered and fly bys are encouraged, said Dory. The morning will feature a banner tow expedition. There will also be a bounce house for the kids and a portable swimming pool, said Dory.
