AT&T service crashes Monday night, stays down through Tuesday

WINNEMUCCA - AT&T experienced a "software-related issue" at their central Reno offices Monday night that shut down internet and phone service for parts of Nevada, including Winnemucca, according to regional representative John Britton.

Britton said that, as of Tuesday around noon, about two-thirds of the affected circuits were restored.

"We are working quickly to restore service," Britton said.

Wireless had been restored for the most part; however, land lines in the Winnemucca area were still down, which also affects credit card machines.

He was not able to say how widespread the outage was at the time.

As of Wednesday morning, Britton said that all connections had been restored, but did not have any more information on the cause of the outage.

"Our first focus is to restore service as quickly as possible," Britton said.

The next step AT&T will take, according to Britton, is to launch an investigation into the root cause of the problem, but that the process is "complicated and could take a while."

Britton said that once a cause is determined, they will take action to make sure that the same thing does not happen again.
