The Nevada Arts Council is launching a series of Arts Town meetings to engage community members across the state in conversations about arts and culture. A meeting in Winnemucca is scheduled for April 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall.
The city's partnership with the Nevada Arts Council stems from conversations on how to improve the arts culture in the community, Mayor Di An Putnam said.
"I got a call asking if we would sponsor (the Arts Town meetings) and of course we said yes," she said.
Putnam said the city is working on improving the arts and arts facilities and she is excited to develop a vision and create more of a rapport with the arts council. The arts council sees a lot of grants come through its office, she said, and those may be able to help Winnemucca improve its arts culture.
"I just think it's important that we work with the state because they have resources that can help us and improve upon what we have," Putnam said.
The event is open to anyone in the community who is interested in where the community is headed in terms of arts and culture. The information gathered at the meetings (in addition to results from an online survey) will help develop a strategic plan for the Nevada Arts Council.
Susan Boskoff, Nevada Arts Council director, said the meetings are designed as "an occasion to acknowledge community vitality, discuss local challenges and set cultural priorities."
Anyone who cannot attend the meeting but is interested in providing input can visit the Nevada Arts Council's website at www.nac.nevadaculture.org. Print copies are available by calling (775) 687-6680.
The Nevada Arts Council is a division of the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs. It is charged with ensuring that state and national funds support cultural activity and encourage participation in the arts throughout Nevada.
