Arthur Matthew English, age 89, passed away on Jan. 19, 2015, after having emergency surgery at the Humboldt General Hospital.
"Art" was born Nov. 9, 1925, in Winnemucca, Nev., to Arthur S. English and Catherine "Kate" Dangelmaier. He grew up in Winnemucca with his sisters Violet, Ella and Kathryn English and spent a good part of his youth raising hell at his grandparent's ranch out at Sod House with his cousins and siblings. His family lived in downtown Winnemucca near where the Griddle is now, until they moved to Lay Street where he lived a few doors down from his future wife.
He graduated from Humboldt County High School in 1943 and was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served in World War II with the 354th Infantry Regiment of the 89th Division. While in the European Theater of operations, he toured from central Europe to the Rhineland and in Austria. He served until May 16, 1946, and returned home to get his degree in business at the University of Nevada, Reno. Once he graduated, he worked for the First National Bank in Winnemucca and was transferred to Las Vegas until he married his high school sweetheart, Meryde Brown on Sept. 7, 1952. After their marriage, they both worked at the Winnemucca Mercantile until 1957 when Art decided to go back to the University of Nevada, Reno and get his masters degree in education.
"Mr. English" began teaching eighth grade math at the Winnemucca Grammar School in 1961. While working in the Humboldt County School system he taught math to thousands of students, served as assistant principal for a few years, and received several awards for his achievements in teaching. While teaching, Art spent his summers fighting fire for the BLM. After 30 years, he retired from teaching in 1991 and spent his free time pursuing hobbies he'd loved all his life like fishing, hunting, hiking in the desert and spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his sister, Kathryn Harrer; daughters, Marlene Killion, Karen Rogers (Mike) and Diana Pargeon (Mike); his grandchildren, Bill Ware, Brandon Ware (Sue), Jason Ware, Paula Frantz (Joel), Marie Pargeon (Marc) and Brian Pargeon and his great-grandchildren, Alyssa Ware, Ryan Ware, Amelia Frantz, Melayne Ware, Charlotte Meugniot and Gunnar Frantz. He is preceded in death by his wife, parents and his sisters, Violet Ward-Hendrickson and Ella Gillespie.
A service will be held at 11 a.m., at the Mackey Hall Convention Center (the East Hall), on Feb. 14, 2015. Anyone interested in submitting a photo (or a few) for the slide show can email Karen at kgenglish@yahoo.com.
