BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Around 20 classes will be held from June 17 - 27 for Great Basin College's (GBC) second annual Kids College for kids ages 6 to 17. The classes will vary in length during that amount of time.
Classes will be held at the GBC Battle Mountain Center and range from college prep courses to fun enrichment courses such as Basque Culture, Cake Decorating, Guitar Crash Course, Greek Mythology, the History of Video Games, Fashion Designer Workshop and an acting class, said GBC Battle Mountain Center Coordinator Ami Rogers, who is in charge of the program.
"It gives local kids something fun, educational and engaging to do over the summer," Rogers said. "The goal of the program is to foster early positive college experiences and to promote future attendance."
The teachers will be from the local community and will have knowledge in their special instructional areas, Rogers said.
Registration is open online at www.campusce.net/gbcnv and ends June 6. Rogers encourages parents to sign their kids up soon since several of the classes filled up last year. Payment is due at the time of registration or parents can apply for scholarships.
"We're hoping that with the addition of online registration that we can increase our numbers this year," Rogers said. "Last year, we served over 60 kids in our first year so we are hoping with the addition of new classes to get more kids this year."
The event has received support from sponsors that has enabled GBC to provide scholarships. The sponsors are the American Red Cross, Newmont, Barrick and Goldcorp. The fees for the classes vary from $20 to $65. Classes will be taught at the center.
