Appointments made to some community boards

Other boards go begging

Humboldt County commissioners had the opportunity to appoint several area residents who had volunteered to serve on community boards at a recent meeting.

Herb Ross was appointed to fill the "business representative" position on the Winnemucca Convention and Visitors Authority (WCVA) Board. That position was recently vacated when KWNA radio station manager Rodd Stowell moved from the community.

Ross noted in his application that he has always liked being very involved on community boards since moving to Nevada in 1992. While living in Lovelock, he served on the school board, Tourism Board, Frontier Committee, Lions Club and for four years he was a reserve officer on the Lovelock Police Department.

Since moving to Winnemucca he's helped put together special events including Run-a-Mucca and Fifties Fever, and he currently serves on the board of the Chamber of Commerce.

"I really like Winnemucca; I think we have a great opportunity here in this town. Between San Francisco and Salt Lake City, we're right in the middle; there's a lot we can do and I want to be part of it. I want to be involved in the community," Ross said.

Speaking in favor of appointing Ross, Commissioner Mike Bell said "I've known Herb for a while and I think he'd do a good job." Commissioners Jim French, Garley Amos and Marlene Brissenden agreed.

"Herb is a neat guy and would do a good job," said Brissenden.

Commissioner Dan Cassinelli, who has served as a WCVA board member, noted that Ross has attended WCVA meetings several times and his enthusiasm is well-known.

Commissioners asked WCVA Chairman Terry Boyle to weigh in.

"I think Herb would be a great choice, he knows our events and he's been involved," Boyle said.

Ross' appointment was unanimous.

An open position on the Humboldt County Library Board will be filled by applicant Barbara Duncan.

Duncan noted she's enjoyed the benefits of the local library for the past 20 years.

"I believe we're very fortunate to have a library with many different media options, resources and adult and children programs with a helpful and knowledgeable staff," she said.

Duncan said she believes the library needs to continue to grow to provide the latest media and technology for the education of the community and its children. "I'm very interested in being part of the growth of Humboldt County Library," she concluded.

Commissioner Garley Amos noted that he is related to Barbara Duncan by marriage, but since he would derive no monetary or other benefit from her serving on the board he was allowed to vote for the appointment.

Two positions on the Ag District 3 board were made. Originally, there was only one opening, but another position opened up when board member Jim Christison said after many years of service, he felt the time had come for him to step aside.

Winnemucca native and local downtown business owner Thomas B. Brown was appointed.

"I love this town and have so many ideas that would benefit the rodeo association, local families and businesses," Brown said. He added he has spent numerous hours at the fairgrounds as a participant, spectator and volunteer.

"The growth at the fairgrounds has been increasing over the years and I would love to be a part of its continued success," said Brown.

The other Ag District 3 appointment is actually a re-appointment. Lifelong resident Dennis Ramasco, who has served for years on the board, requested and was given re-appointment.

"I have seen the growth of many events at the fairgrounds and would like to see this continue," said Ramasco. He added he was looking forward to another four-year term.

The Humboldt County Board to Manage Wildlife had three vacancies and one application for re-appointment. Tom Cassinelli of Paradise Valley asked to be re-appointed to another term on the board and was unanimously confirmed.

Commission member Dan Cassinelli noted he is related to Tom Cassinelli but as he would derive no particular monetary or other benefit from the appointment of his relative, he was allowed to vote.

Commissioners appointed Pete Marvel to serve on the Paradise Valley Weed Board. They said they appreciated the request by long-time board member Rick Latimer to be re-appointed but believed that his health made his continued service too difficult.
