BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Applications are being accepted until Dec. 14 for the Family Resource Center's Christmas Alert program, said Executive Director Jana Moyes, who said the program will probably assist around 100 families this year. Last year, it helped 110.
The applications became available on Nov. 18, and just three days later 30 people had applied, Moyes said.
Those who would like to apply can come to the Family Resource Center and must bring proof of income, or if there is no income, a written statement on how this person is surviving, Moyes said.
The center is starting to collect items for the program and needs new hats, coats, gloves and scarves, new toys and perishable or nonperishable food items for a Christmas dinner such as turkeys, stuffing, gravy and pies.
Moyes said the center sent out 175 letters to businesses and organizations asking for donations for the program. She said local schools usually step up and do fundraisers or food drives.
Items can be dropped off at the Family Resource Center and are asked to be unwrapped. The last day to donate is Dec. 21 and Christmas food baskets and gifts will be delivered by the Family Resource Center and community volunteers on Dec. 23. Usually the Lander County Sheriff's Office helps out as well, Moyes added.
"Our community was really good about pitching in and making a difference last year and I'm just hoping that we can exceed expectations for this year," Moyes said.
People can also stop by the center and donate tax deductible funds or checks can be made out to Christmas Alert and mailed to the Family Resource Center, 470 S. Broad St., Battle Mountain, NV 89820.
The center is also looking for people, businesses, organizations or school classes to adopt families. People can choose to adopt only a partial family or a full family and can provide the family with Christmas gifts or a holiday dinner or both, explained Moyes. Those interested in adopting a family can come by the center. Last year, 12 families got adopted.
The Family Resource Center will be holding a Community Christmas Festival on Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Battle Mountain Civic Center.

The event will include food and vendors and all of the money raised will go toward Christmas Alert. There will also be photos with Santa and a marshmallow roast that evening in the parking lot. Last year, the event raised $500 for the program.
