WINNEMUCCA - Senior Crafters are proof that work can be fun as well as beneficial. Their organization is the one that provides the extras for the Senior Center that the center can't afford, but certainly needs.

Their efforts have helped pay for such things as carpet, dishwasher, an outside fence, computers, lunch tables and the list goes on.

To enable them to do more they hold an annual Craft Fair & Bake sale at the Senior Center each year and this year it is on Oct. 29 between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

There will be all those handmade one of a kind crafts, baked goods, a light lunch will be available, vendors and much more in one place.

The group started out in the Nixon Hall many years ago and when it burned down moved into the Senior Center. It's a great opportunity for people of like minds to gather together.

And it's not just for the ladies.

"I've been sewing all my life," said Edwin Holcomb, 84.

And sewing is only the beginning as he also crochets and does cross stitch. On his Brothers Knitting Machine he has made scarves, hats and hooded blankets.

Holcomb donated some hooded blankets to the Winnemucca Police Department recently for people who could use a little warm comfort when it's cold or life has dealt them a blow.

He has already given them eight and they have asked for more.

WPD Officer Jeff Casalez said the blankets will be used to comfort people in tough situations, such as homeless adults and children.

"People say they wish they had something to throw on in certain situations," he said. "Each of our units will carry two of these."

Holcomb said working with all the different kinds of material allows him to express himself in a creative way.

He and the rest of the crafters use donated material of all kinds to make one of a kind projects that can be used for all kinds of purposes and special events.

President Joy Darre said their creative items are for sale year around in their craft filled store at the Senior Center.

"Prices here are pretty rock bottom," she said.

Darre said they have something for birthdays and anniversaries and any kind of special occasion and with Christmas coming up it is a great time to go looking for that special gift for that special person.

"Sometimes we take orders and if we can help them (customers) out we will," she said.

The organization also donates blankets to the first born New Year's child at Humboldt General Hospital.

They have special occasion cards, doll clothes, blankets, scarves, hats of all kinds, baby books, bibs, booties, robes, yarn covered hangers, etc. Because each one is handmade each one is different and so a one of a kind.

And with their prices everyone can afford something.

"You bring $10 in here, we can fill a bag for you," Darre said.

She said that the group could always use more members. It doesn't cost anything to join and the fellowship with like minded seniors is priceless. Plus you will be helping the Senior Center get some of the things they would not be able to have were it not for the Senior Crafters.

Vendors are also welcome and can rent an eight-foot table at the craft fair to show their wares. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. plus there will be a bake sale with a lot of homemade goodies.

The group meets Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Senior Center from 10 a.m. to noon every week. If you would like to to have a part with this group just show up or if you have any questions call the Senior Center at 623.6211.
