Over 100 local kids from ages 5-to-13 participated in the 22nd annual fun-filled Humboldt County Fishing Day Saturday, June 7.
The event was hosted by the Wilson family at their Andorno Ranch Pond, and sponsored by the Santa Rosa Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, the Winnemucca Field Office of the BLM, and the Nevada Department of Wildlife.
Brad Bowman from the Nevada Department of Wildlife stocked the pond full of rainbow trout ensuring that there were plenty of fish for the young anglers to catch.
Fishing started just after 8 a.m., and within moments many of the youngsters were reeling in fish and claiming prizes for the "first fish caught" and "largest fish" in three age groups: 5-to-7, 8-to-10, and 11-to-13-year olds.
The first fish caught category winners were Annika Elms (5-7), Joshua Northrup (8-10) and Meianah Bitt (11-13). Around 12:30 p.m. the Biggest Fish Contest winners were announced and the winners included Allie Wilkin (5-to-7), Bethany White (8-to-10) and Jasper Glasgow and Cody Noyes (11-to13).
Big fish catches ranged from 12-to-13 inches in length which was smaller than in past years.
When kids wanted a break from fishing, they tested their skills at the casting contest. The casting contest began at 9:30 a.m. with kids lining up to cast a velcro covered weight at a small pool. Casting contest winners were Ethan Anaya and Dean Watterson (5-7 years old), Eva Andradottir and Jimmie Madrid (8-10 years old) and Natasha Drake and Trinity Rhoades (11-13 years old).
Smokey Bear made an appearance to the delight of all the kids.
Throughout the derby, donated prizes were raffled off to the participants. The prizes included camp chairs, rod and reel combos, tackle boxes, sleeping bags, and other outdoor equipment.
At noon, the grand prize, a new bicycle was won by Jameson Lee. Every child in attendance received souvenir goodie bags from the Forest Service, BLM, and Nevada Department of Wildlife.
This event had great community support, with raffle prizes and other donated supplies from the following local merchants C.B. Brown's True Value Hardware. and Reliable Ace Hardware. Barrick and Newmont rounded out the prizes with generous donations. Raley's donated bottled water, while Echeverria Pumping LLC donated the toilets for the day.
