DENIO - The 50th Annual Denio Barbeque and Play Day was held on June 1 in the small town of Denio on the Nevada/Oregon border.
First established in 1963, the event is held each year on the first Saturday of June. It continues to be a fun, community gathering full of camaraderie for young and old alike.
The day begins at the Denio Arena in the morning with team branding, the kids events, and team roping. A quilt display and silent auction are held at the Community Hall.
In the evening, the barbeque featuring steak, Basque chorizo, side dishes and desserts, along with an outdoor dance, wrap up the activities. A good time was enjoyed by all in attendance.
Team branding winners were Jeff Garijo, Will DeLong, Jim Filippini and Lukas Williams. The team roping was won by Nick and Hyland Wilkinson, with second place claimed by Josh Dufurrena and Jake Logan.
The kids events feature rodeo-type events for children ages 0 to 15 with activities for five different age groups. Events included sheep riding, stick horse barrels, barrel racing and dummy roping, along with more non-traditional events such as the potato race, figure 8 race, goat undecorating, as well as many more. Every child who participated (48 children in all) received prizes provided by the generous support and donations of numerous sponsors. The all-around winners for the kids events included: Ben Marvel, Emma Garijo, Monte Kingen, Megan Miller, and Lane Johnson. Monte Kingen took home the top honor of "High-Point Cowboy." Thank you to all who came and helped to make this year a success!
