BATTLE MOUNTAIN - The Battle Mountain High School track and field team had a handful of athletes qualify for the NIAA State Track and Field Championships presented by the Farmers Insurance this Friday and Saturday at Silverado High School in Las Vegas.
Dylan Annis claimed the Longhorns' lone individual title, as the junior won the triple jump with a leap of 40 feet, 7 inches. That jump was nearly seven inches better than his seeding mark he came in the regional with.
In addition, Annis advanced to the state championships in the long jump at 18-5 to place third. Yerington's Tylor Thomas won the event with a leap of 19-1. His teammate, Shawn Spurlock, was second at 18-8.50.
Jesus Dorado earned the final transfer spot into the state championships, placing fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 47.44. Yerington's Skylar Bryan won the race with a time of 40.87. Dorado, a junior, also finished eighth in the 110-meter hurdles at 21.46 and he was eighth in the 400 meters in a time of 56.99.
All four of the relay teams for the Battle Mountain boys qualified for the state championships. The 4x100 relay of David Castellon, Kody Schoorl, Blake Dorian and Allan Enriquez were fourth in a time of 48.05. The 4x200 relay of Castellon, Luis Tovar, Annis and Enriquez also finished fourth ay 1:38.04.
The 4x400 relay of Dorian, Andrew Cox, Castellon and Tovar were fourth with a time of 3:40.77 and the 4x800 relay of Cox, Castellon, Annis and Tovar were fourth at 8:58.42.
A number of the boys just missed out on advancing to the state championships. Tovar finished fifth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:04.37, which was nearly six seconds better than his seed time. North Tahoe's Peter Holmes grabbed the final transfer spot at 2:03.69.
Dorian, a freshman, placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 17-5, while Yerington's Ernesto Cervantes garnered the fourth and final transfer spot at 17-10. In addition, Dorian finished eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 37-4.50.
Freshman DJ Potter beat his seed mark by nearly two feet to finish fifth at 36-4.25. Yerington's Ray Mitchell was fourth at 38-4. Kody Schoorl was fifth in the discus with a throw of 101-9. Teammates Marco Vallejo (97-0), Zach Potter (94-2) and Regan Knight (89-6) were sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Schoorl added a seventh-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 17-0 and he was eighth in the 100-meter dash in a time of 12.97.
Knight was eighth in the high jump, as he cleared 5-2, while fellow freshman Breven Engelson was ninth in the shot put at 32-10.50 and 10th in the high jump at 5-0.
Nathan Taylor was sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.61; he was 10th in the 200 meters at 26.32 and 15th in the 100 meters in a time of 12.84.
Cox turned in a pair of 10th-place finishes in the triple jump (35.5.50) and the 400 meters at 57:90, while Oscar Chavira was 10th in the shot put at 31.7.50. Nathan O'Dell placed 10th in the 300-meter hurdles at 47.58, 11th in the 1,600 meters at 5:30.92 and he was 17th in the 800 meters with a time of 2:34.75.
Chris Wilkins finished 13th in the triple jump (34-4) and was 16th in the 400 meters at 1:04.40 and Vallejo was 14th in the long jump with a leap of 14-10 and he placed 16th in the 100 meters at 12.97.
Thomas Millsap finished 12th in the 200 meters in a time of 26.52 and he was 17th in the 100 meters at 13.31. Colby Rasmussen was 16th in the 800 meters (2:31.95) and 22nd in the 1,600 meters (6:13.59).
As a team Battle Mountain finished fourth with 75 points. Yerington ran away with the team title with 225.50 points. North Tahoe (94) and Pershing County (88) were second and third, respectively.
Andresa Dinwiddie turned in the best performance for the Lady Longhorns, as she placed third in the shot put with a throw of 26.6.75. Yerington's Kassidy Lommori won the event at 34.3.25. In addition, Dinwiddie was eighth in the discus with a toss of 65-5.
Wayne Piramide advanced to the state championships in the triple jump with a leap of 28-4.50. Piramide also finished eighth in the long jump with a mark of 11-11.
Shawna Rasmussen will be headed to Las Vegas, as she finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 26-3.50. The senior was fifth in the discus at 74-03, and was four feet behind North Tahoe's Sara Trimm who was fourth with a throw of 78-5.
Battle Mountain had three of its girls relay teams advance to the state championships. The 4x800 relay of Alana Fredrick, Piramide, Julieta Franco and Olivia Price were third at 12:12.43.
The 4x100 relay of Piramide, Franco, Price and Skylee Huitt were fourth at 59.21 and the 4x400 relay of Catherine Dunlavy, Cindy Torres, Fredrick and Franco were fourth with a time of 5:23.47.
The 4x200 relay of Franco, Fredrick, Kelly Ramirez and Price were fifth and just missed out on reaching state with a time of 2:06.02.
Doornek posted finishes of fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (54.56) and seventh in the 100-meter hurdles (19.06). Sarah Mills finished fifth in the high jump as she cleared 4-0 and the freshman was 11th in the long jump at 10-5. Chavez placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 25-3 and she was seventh in the discus with a mark of 69-9.
Nancy Piedra placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 21.76 and she was 15th in the 200 meters at 32.31. Dunlavy (2:13.27) and Torres (3:31.07) were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 800 meters and Fredrick and Price were ninth in the discus and long jump, respectively, at 61-3 and 11-1.
As a team Battle Mountain finished fifth with 60 points. North Tahoe claimed the team title with 166 points. Yerington (123), Incline (88) and Pershing County, were second and third and fourth, respectively.
