WINNEMUCCA - This is Mr. W.H. Devoe. He was a long-line skinner and proud of it. He'd have picked up his load in the Sierra foothills on the other side of Gerlach.
All of that timber, probably Juniper, was on its way to Red Butte. Not for firewood, though that would be welcome in a boom camp constantly short of fuel. Instead, those relatively small and short timbers were on their way to the mines. In 1900 mining camps, in a desert, this is what was available for timbering.
Surprisingly tough, Juniper timbers were used throughout the Jackson Mountain area. Fortunately for Mr. DeVoe, he is almost at the end of a long, dusty, very dry journey. Red Butte is only a few miles away.
