The Nevada Outdoor School AmeriCorps program kicked off the 2014-15 year by traveling to Reno on Sept. 12 for the AmeriCorps 20th Anniversary Event and National Service Project.
Thirteen AmeriCorps members serving at host sites in Wells, Elko, Battle Mountain, Winnemucca and Lovelock made the trip to Reno.
They participated in cleaning up the Truckee river with other Northern Nevada AmeriCorps members representing Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation, the Children's Cabinet, Urban Roots and Great Basin Institute. Other participants included the city of Reno, staff members from Senator Reid's office, AmeriCorps alums and other community volunteers.
The event was organized by Nevada Volunteers, the funding agency for AmeriCorps in Nevada. At 8:30 am, Kathleen Sandoval led the Northern Nevada AmeriCorps members in reciting the AmeriCorps pledge, an event that was coordinated by the Corporation for National and Community Service across the nation. In Washington, D.C., President Obama and three former presidents, George Bush, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton led the pledge to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the Corporation for National and Community Service which Bill Clinton signed into law in 1994.
The Nevada Outdoor School AmeriCorps program is the only AmeriCorps program in Nevada that has members spread across northern Nevada. The program is also unique since members serve in three AmeriCorps priority areas: education, environment and human needs, while many programs concentrate on only one priority area. The 20th Anniversary event provided a wonderful opportunity for NOS AmeriCorps members to get to know one another at the beginning of their service year and to see the bigger AmeriCorps picture in Nevada.
NOS AmeriCorps members are serving at Wells Family Resource Center, Bureau of Land Management in Elko, Lander County Schools, Lowry High School, Frontier Community Action Agency, Nevada Outdoor School, Pleasant Senior Center, Pershing County Senior Center and Friends of Nevada Wilderness in Reno and southern Nevada.
The NOS AmeriCorps program is still looking for members to serve at Communities in Schools of Northeastern Nevada in Elko and at Friends of Black Rock High Rock in Gerlach. The NOS AmeriCorps program also has several openings for host sites, nonprofits seeking individuals who are dedicated to serving their communities and who can provide direct service and volunteer recruitment for the host site.
