LOVELOCK - After taking the summer off, Lovelock's American Legion Post No. 6 is gearing up for their next round of fundraisers.
The veterans group will resume their slot tournament at Sturgeons on Sept. 18. The tournament will continue on the third Wednesday of each month until June. The tournament has a $10 buy-in. Along with the tournament, the Legion is holding a raffle for a 55-inch television, among other high-dollar items. The winners will be picked at the tournament.
A special scholarship raffle will feature a Henry Golden Boy .22-caliber rifle. All proceeds from this raffle will go toward the Legion's scholarship fund. Last year the organization gave out $1,000 in scholarships to Pershing County High School grads.
Putting the "fun" in the fundraising, cow patty golf is back. The golf tournament, played in the hay-stubbed fields of Lovelock's Upper Valley, is back for its fourth year. The tournament is set for Sept. 28.
Team sign-ups are currently being taken. Team entry fee is $140. Duffers looking for a team should contact the Lovelock American Legion Adjutant Steve Foster at 273-2923.
"We'll help you get hooked up with a team if you don't have one," Foster said.
Individual entry fees are $35 each.
The tournament is played similar to the "green" tournament, although the holes are a painted circle around four feet in diameter with a pole and flag in the center. There are 18 holes and a few side challenges, such as closest to the hole and longest drive.
Foster said he is hoping to get at least 20 teams to play this year.
The Legion is also looking for businesses or individuals who would like to sponsor a hole. The sponsor would get their name on the flag in the hole they sponsor. Contact Foster for sponsorship prices.
Aside from the scholarship raffle, all funds generated by these fundraisers go into the Legion's general fund. Foster said money in the general fund is used for Post No. 6 expenses and for donations made around the community.
This past year the Legion's donations have included Veterans Honor Flight of Nevada, Boy Scouts of America and the MKC Rodeo Productions. They have also sent aspiring students to Boys State Camp, Naval Academy Camp and Sea Cadet Camp.
"We focus our donations on youth and veteran-related events," Foster said.
Most of their donations benefit local youth and events, he added.
There is still time to enter the Cow Patty Golf Tournament and sign-up for the slot tournament, Foster said.
