BATTLE MOUNTAIN - Lander County commissioners unanimously approved at their July 25 meeting a standard agreement for consulting services between the county and Summit Engineering for $244,000 for GIS services Phase 1, Task 2, of the Minor Road Mapping Project.

This consists of the mapping of an additional 1,800 miles of minor roads, said Jim McGuire, a land surveyor for Summit Engineering who is the project manager for the road mapping project and came before commissioners.

It contains all of the minor roads that were not mapped in Task 1 of the project, which included 330 miles of roads. Task 1 was completed in June. The Task 2 portion started July 15 and is slated to wrap up by the end of the year, McGuire said.

The per mile fee for Task 2 is $130 per mile at an estimated cost of $234,000. Summit requested an additional $5,000 for related meetings, displays, etc., and another $5,000 to cover the costs associated with the design and printing of 500 copies of the map for public distribution, along with the costs of printing six additional large format maps.

A final map of all county roads is predicted to be provided to the county by the end of the year, McGuire said.

For Task 2, all of the minor roads will need to be driven by Summit and are located on public lands.

At their Feb. 14 meeting, commissioners unanimously accepted a proposal by Summit Engineering for $49,000 to map out 250 miles of minor roads in southern Lander County, which was considered Task 1 of the mapping project. In the end it turned out to be 330 miles of roads, McGuire explained.

In 2010, Summit completed the mapping of all of the maintained roads in the county. These roads will be shown on the final map.[[In-content Ad]]
