Advocates for Victims of Abuse looking for volunteers

WINNEMUCCA - The Advocates for Victims of Abuse (AVA) organization is looking for volunteers!

Advocates are wanted in a variety of different areas, including crisis intervention, community awareness and education, program development and assistance, writing, resource and referral assistance and for the Court Appointed Special Advocates program.

Basic requirements:

• Volunteers must submit to a background check.

• Volunteers must have own method of transportation.

• Volunteers must live within an appropriate distance of their service area.

• Volunteers must not work or volunteer for agencies that conflict with role and responsibilities.

• Volunteers must be willing to make a commitment to be on call at least once a month and able to work harmoniously with staff and other professionals.

• Volunteers must have the ability to respect and maintain strict client confidentiality and adhere to agency standards and policies.

• Volunteers should have sound judgment and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations.

• Volunteers must have the ability to refrain from giving advice and projecting personal views.

• Volunteers must have good self-care and the ability to seek out support from others when necessary.

They seek individuals with qualities such as responsibility, reliability and dependability, as well as warmth, compassion and the desire to help others in need.

Advocates are responsible for providing clear, concise, information to victims and concerned others. Advocates do not judge, criticize or give advice. Their role is to provide emotional support and advocate on behalf of the client.
