A real Nevada prospector -

WINNEMUCCA - This photo, taken in 1924, is of August D. Ramel, one of the first prospectors at the Red Butte mining district in the Jackson Mountains.

He worked in other mining districts in the area, notably during 1910 for Henry Mayhew at Rosebud. Like all prospectors of the time, he was able to do a lot more than mine. He built the home in the photo. Like many other structures in the Jackson Mountain area, it was constructed of sun-dried adobe brick. As long as the roof is kept tight, adobe is surprisingly weather resistant. Mr. Ramel's home outlasted him!
