A few musings as we wind our way through the summer

For What It's Worth

This just in, I have opted out of my contract at Winnemucca Publishing and will become a free agent, as will LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh of the Miami Heat.

Since the Heat were defeated by the Spurs in a less than thrilling fashion, it's time to blow up the NBA. No need to worry, they are still going to get their millions of dollars.

Oh by the way, I am not going anywhere (I am not allowed to). But, I am still waiting on my millions. All I am asking for is five years and $100 million. Any donations will be accepted..

Speaking of the NBA, it's time for the draft and that must mean the sports season in is in depths of the summer season. One watches the NBA Draft just to see what happens or if there is nothing else on TV. Hopefully, Steven A. Smith is far away from my screen.

However, football is just a couple of months away from preseason games and that means summer will come to an end.

The University of Nevada announced last week that its football team will be playing at Texas A&M and Buffalo in 2015. Also lined up are games with Notre Dame, Purdue and Arizona. Of course the motive is to get a good payday from those schools as well as the national television appearance. Eventually, Purdue, Oregon State and Arizona will make their way to Mackay Stadium.

It will be good for the athletic budget that is one of the worst in the Mountain West. It was disappointing to see Nevada drop UCLA from the schedule. It would have been nice to see the Bruins play in Reno. Last year, Nevada moved its game with Oregon to Eugene. I know it's tough, but if you want to sell tickets you need the top names in college football to come to your place once in awhile.

I will say though I have watched the World Cup since it has started and have found it entertaining. I had Spain, the home country of my grandparents, going to the finals, but they have let me down quickly with two shocking losses.

The US picked up an amazing 2-1 win over Ghana in its first match, avenging two previous losses in World Cup play. The game-winner was from John Brooks (no, not the Lowry wrestling coach), a little-known sub off the bench.

It would be nice to cheer America into the next round, but the chances of them winning the World Cup is slim to none. Let's see what they can do against Portugal. Brazil is my favorite to win. Yeah, I went out on a limb on that one.

It's hard to believe that the baseball season is almost three months old. It's the end of June and that means the Cubs are out of it already. There is hope for my loveable losers with a load of talent in the minor league system. Perhaps the Cubs can move the kids up at the end of the year and let them play.

For the almighty mid-season predictions, New York will win the American League East, the Detroit Tigers will win the Central and Oakland the West. Toronto and the Los Angeles Angels are the Wild Card winners.

Oakland beats Detroit to win the American League.

In the National League, the St. Louis Cardinals win the Central Division. Washington will take the East and San Francisco the West. Atlanta and Los Angeles win the Wild Card spots.

The Giants beat the Cardinals in the NL Championship and it's an all Bay Area World Series with San Francisco beating Oakland in six games.
