4th Annual "Walk in Memory-Walk for Hope"

WINNEMUCCA - The 4th Annual "Walk in Memory - Walk for Hope" community suicide prevention awareness walk will be taking place on Saturday, Sept. 15. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Winnemucca Community Garden, 151 W. McArthur Ave.

Walk participants are asked to donate $20 per individual, which includes a T-shirt connecting us to one another as we support and encourage one another throughout the walk.

There are nine communities statewide walking on the same day and last year we had almost 1,200 walkers statewide. Locally, we had close to 60 walkers. Each person walking will need to complete a registration form. If you would like to participate in a specific walk, you can register online by clicking on the community you want to participate in, completing the registration form and then completing the PayPal feature (Please note that if you don't complete the PayPal feature you won't be considered pre-registered). For more information on the individual communities and or to register on line please visit the website at www.nvsuicideprevention.org. If you prefer, you can print out the registration PDF form, complete it and either mail it in to the address on the form or bring it with you to the walk in your community. To participate on a team, go to the drop down box and select a team already there or enter the name of a team in the "new team" area.

All donations will be used to help fund the various Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention (NCSP) programs in the communities throughout the state. Each walk site varies in the actual distance but they range from 3K to 5K. Each community also has their own special ways of remembering the loved ones they have lost to suicide on that day taking place before and after the walk. All locations participating in Nevada walks are Douglas County, Elko, Las Vegas/Henderson, Mesquite, Pahrump, Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, Reno/Sparks, Winnemucca and Yerington.

Because there is help, there is hope. We want to make sure individuals struggling with thoughts of suicide and the friends and families doing their best to support them can be connected to resources and services that can make a difference. The concerted efforts of the NCSP, the Office of Suicide Prevention, the FCAA and the many local task forces and coalitions across the state hosting events such as the "Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope" will help make Nevada a healthier and safer place to live.

The NCSP is dedicated to partnering and collaborating with local and state individuals and organizations for the development and implementation of evidence based suicide prevention, intervention, and post-vention strategies and programs in the state of Nevada. With the help of its members, NCSP has created community suicide prevention walks that take place across the state of Nevada during National Suicide Prevention Week in September. With credit to the Elko SOS group for the very first "Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope" in 2006, the walk event raises awareness of the problem of suicide in Nevada, offers healing support to survivors of suicide loss, and raises money for communities to support prevention efforts.

Another prevention effort that the NCSP offers is Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) which is designed to help all caregivers become more willing, ready and able to help persons at risk. Suicide can be prevented with the help of prepared caregivers. Last year, Winnemucca had over 30 participants complete this training. Just as "CPR" skills make physical first aid possible, training in suicide intervention develops the skills used in suicide first aid. ASIST is a two-day intensive, interactive and practice-dominated course designed to help caregivers recognize risk and learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide.

The workshop is for all caregivers, including professionals, paraprofessionals and lay people. It is suitable for mental health professionals, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, teachers, counselors, youth workers, police and correctional staff, school support staff, clergy, and community volunteers. Winnemucca had participation including most of those in the roles mentioned above in our community.

We hope you will join us for the Fourth Annual "Walk in Memory- Walk for Hope" Saturday, September 15, 2012. For more information please contact the Walk Coordinator, Alaine Nye at 775-623-9003 or fcaahumboldt@gmail.com.
