4-H show, sale a Fair favorite

WINNEMUCCA - The 4-H Show and Sale happens just once a year, but the skills youth learn will last them a lifetime.

This year's event, which is scheduled for Friday, August 30, through Sunday, September 1, will see more than 85 youth ages 9 to 19 show more than 100 beef, pig, sheep and goats as part of the large animal show, produced by the Humboldt County Show and Sale Committee.

A variety of chickens, rabbits and cavy will also be on display as part of the small animal show, produced by the 4-H Small Animal Committee.

Additionally, the 5- to 8-year-old "Clover Buds" will show rabbits, chickens and cavy.

The weekend will kick off at 4 p.m. Friday with rabbit and cavy showmanship in the Livestock Pavilion at the Winnemucca Events Complex. Then Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, rabbits, large animals and poultry will take the stage.

Mayor Di An Putnam will present the 4-H Youth Awards on the Main Stage Outside at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Sunday, the large animal round robin contest will take place at 8 a.m. in the Livestock Pavilion followed by the Buyers' Coffee at 9:30 a.m., also in the Livestock Pavilion.

The high point of the weekend will take place at 10 a.m. Sunday morning when the 4-H Livestock Sale takes center stage and local 4-Hers auction off dozens of beef, sheep, swine and goats.

The public is invited to attend the auction or even to bid. The event offers local families the chance

to purchase meat at a very fair price while helping out this area's youngest livestock producers at the same time.

But monetary gain isn't the only thing that youth will take from their 4-H experience, said Humboldt County Cooperative Extension Volunteer and Event Specialist/4-H Program Manager Sharon Barton.

"The educational value of these [4-H] programs is incredible," she said. "These kids learn life skills as well as respect, responsibility, follow-through and commitment, not only to themselves but to their animals."

She continued, "These are skills that they can take out into the world and use."

All animals will be on display until 4 p.m. Sunday, September 1, in the 4-H Barn at the Winnemucca Events Complex.
