RENO - The High Sierra Riders 4-H Club, a program of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, is hosting its third annual Saddle Up® for St. Jude event, 4 - 9 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 10 at Washoe Lake State Park.
Riders are invited to enjoy the views of the nearby Sierra Nevada, Carson and Virginia Mountain Ranges, while taking in the wildlife on the trails of Washoe Lake State Park's 8,053 acres. The park is located at 4855 Eastlake Blvd., in New Washoe City, Nev., 18 miles south of Reno.
A rider donation of $25 is requested to support St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, to help advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Additional donations are welcome. Participants will enjoy trail riding 5 - 7 p.m. When they return, they will be provided with barbeque dinner. Others, who don't participate in the ride, may also enjoy the barbecue dinner for $10, followed by a dessert auction.
The 4-H Program is a youth leadership development program offered by Cooperative Extension nationwide, with more than 49,000 youth participating in Nevada. Through 4-H, youth learn communications, leadership, career development, citizenship, healthy living, science, technology, engineering, math and more. A Tufts University Study of 7,000 adolescents from diverse backgrounds across 44 states found that youth involved in 4-H are 3.3 times more likely to actively contribute to their communities, 2 times as likely to go to college, and 2.3 times more likely be physically active.
