4-H club hosting rattlesnake avoidance clinic for dogs

WINNEMUCCA - Rattlesnakes are a well known reality of the desert environment. Not only is there a wide variety of species of rattlesnakes, but there are also large numbers inhabiting different habitats, making human encounters even more likely.

According to biologists and wildlife officials, rattlesnake numbers and encounters are going to be at an all-time high this year due to the dry winter and warm temperatures.

Most people have the sense to avoid rattlesnakes if they come across one, but a dog's natural curiosity puts them at great risk of receiving a potentially deadly, venomous bite.

GetRattled Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs is holding a training clinic in Winnemucca at the 4-H Arena at 1085 Fairgrounds Road. The clinic will be held on Sunday, June 9, from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Sponsored by Humboldt County 4-H program, for a small training fee, people will get the extra assurance and peace of mind that their dogs will avoid dangerous rattlesnake encounters, protecting the dogs and their families from a rattlesnake bite.

Not only does GetRattled train dogs, but also aims to educate the public, providing professional information along with a live rattlesnake display. Also shown are commonly mistaken, harmless snakes, which are often on hand at events and available to touch and hold.

Who is GetRattled? GetRattled is a partnership between John Potash, a licensed snake handler with 22 years of experience keeping and handling venomous snakes, and Willie Stevens, a professional dog trainer with over 20 years of dog training experience and judging.

Together, they have been providing Rattlesnake Avoidance Training Clinics for over 10 years and have successfully trained thousand of dogs.
