"Do One Thing" was the topic of Anna Klovstad, project manager for the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. Giving many ideas for ways we as individuals can conserve energy, she complimented 4-H and the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension for its many efforts at green education.
Joe Atack, director of education for the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival, took the audience back in time to a visit with Shakespeare where the teens played various theatrical roles.
Participants highlighted program ideas at the Share Fair, including Marianne Papa's 4-H Soap Project.
Pat Irwin, 29-year 4-H Leader and Pershing County commissioner, started Saturday morning with a communication activity. Using foot-long pieces of PVC pipe, teens and adults worked together to get five marbles from one end of the room to the other.
Adult and teen leaders had their choice of workshops including: From My Pyramid to My Plate"; "Inspiring Young Minds ... The Scientist in All of Us"; "Art, the Universal Language"; "Youth Leadership - Planning for Success; 4-H Afterschool with Mentoring Program; Explore It, Design It and Use It"; "Staying Green with Nevada Recycles"; "Starting Plants from Seeds"; "Reuse, Recycle, Reduce"; "Introduction to 4-H On-Line & My 4-H Experience"; "Earth Science"; "Alternate Fundraising"; "Lego Robotics"; "Jazz Up Your Meetings"; "Dog Showmanship 101"; and "Go Green or Go Home."
The evening program started with a welcome from the dean of the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Karin Hinton. She addressed many of the concerns facing 4-H and thanked all the leaders for their many volunteer hours.
At the Recognition Banquet, all 4-H Leaders were thanked for their continued commitment and service. Rene Childs of Pershing County was inducted into the Nevada 4-H Hall of Fame. Rick Huskins of Las Vegas received the 4-H Ag Leader of the Year presented by Sue Hoffman. His 4-H Road Runners is the largest community club in the state.
Doug Poole and Erika Paul Carlson from Reno entertained the group with jazz music. Marianne Papa was recognized as part of the planning committee. The Nevada/Utah Dairy Council, Ramada Inn and NV Ag Foundation were thanked as sponsors.
The evening culminated with a "You Pick It" raffle which raised scholarships for next year's Leaders Forum in Las Vegas next February.
