WINNEMUCCA - This weekend, the Winnemucca Host Lions Club will team up with Humboldt General Hospital to sponsor the 2012 Community Health and Safety Fair.
From 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, local residents are invited to take advantage of the many health services that will be available at the East Hall of the Winnemucca Convention Center.
Plus, every person who comes to this year's event will get one free chance to win a Kindle Fire from the Winnemucca Host Lions Club.
For those who would like to up their odds of winning the Kindle Fire, additional drawing tickets will be for sale. Cost is $1 each or six for $5.
This year's fair will offer four different blood screenings through Humboldt General Hospital.
A basic chem panel will be available for $25. For $35, a comprehensive chem panel will offer a complete lipid profile, a group of tests that may help determine risk of coronary heart disease.
Additionally, HGH will offer a prostate blood test (for men only) and a TSH blood test for men or women, which screens for thyroid disorders. Both tests are $20 each.
Participants are reminded to fast for at least eight hours prior to all blood testing; water, coffee and meds are OK.
Free screenings for pulmonary function, blood pressure, body fat and vision will also be available.
Plus, a variety of other booths offering health- and safety-related information will be set up.
Fair organizers say each year the event offers more and more information and services for local residents, and they don't expect this year to be any different. That's saying something considering there were nearly 300 people who did blood work last year in addition to another 100 or so who took advantage of the fair's other offerings.
